Areta Lloyd

Biography

Areta practices estates and trusts litigation, with a particular focus on capacity litigation. She has experience with elder health law including medical assistance in dying.

Areta is a strong, capable advocate for her clients. She is creative and unafraid to take on difficult cases. She successfully secured an unusual Mareva order freezing an absconding estate trustee’s undistributed inheritance from another estate in a different jurisdiction and had it paid into Ontario Court. She does the groundwork to ensure her clients get the orders they seek, such as a difficult to obtain order compelling a capacity assessment.

She is known for her candid and tactful communication skills. Areta provides big picture analysis and strategic advice, resourceful and realistic solutions, and expert guidance throughout the litigation process.

“Areta, I greatly appreciate your help and expertise. I felt you did an incredible job and always looked out for my interests and got me all the decisions I needed. We are celebrating… still trying to digest what a monumental decision we got and the road it took to get here. I feel I did right by my parents…”

She participates in public speaking and in presenting courses on the topics of estates law, health law and law practice management. Areta has written for several publications, and wrote a column for the Alzheimer caregiver website ALZlive.com, her column sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto. She is a member of the Board of the Toronto Lawyers’ Association, where she participates as a mentor for junior lawyers, and sits on the membership and sponsorship committees. Areta also devotes her time to promoting international justice as an executive board member of Canadian Lawyers for Ukraine.
